Match Preview

Two sides in dreadful form will meet this weekend as Sampdoria look to register their first win of the Serie A season when they head to the Stadio Alberto Picco to meet with a Spezia side looking extremely topsy-turvy after six games.

Regardless of where we head in the 2022/23 relegation fight in Serie A, it’s games like this that are set to give us an understanding of what is set to go down. In fact, in contrast to every other top five league, Serie A has five teams still yet to register a win in the league, and even for those sides like Spezia who have tasted victory, there are still a boatload of losses coming in too.

As of now, Sampdoria are sitting 19th in the league and with 11 goals conceded already, this is one more than Spezia and just three fewer than the league’s worst defensive side so far, Monza. In fact, the Genoa outfit sit just one point ahead of Monza and if things don’t change fast, it could be a long and tiresome season of fighting relegation.

Sampdoria are coming into this one off the back of a loss to champions AC Milan, but it didn’t come without a fight. Filip Duricic scored an equaliser for the club in the second half, before 10-man Milan won it from the penalty spot. However, despite the decent defensive work at times, it’s only three weeks ago when they were hammered by Salernitana 4-0, while they lost 2-1 to Hellas Verona just prior to the defeat against Milan.

Spezia have one win on the board so far this campaign, as they managed to beat Empoli on the opening weekend. However, with a 3-0 loss to Inter Milan, a 2-0 defeat to Juventus, and a recent win for Napoli in a 1-0 match, the club may have a win on the board, but it’s been a month since they felt that victorious feeling.
