United States vs Trinidad and Tobago match preview
The United States kick off top of Group A, but will they end the night still there?
On opening night of the CONCACAF Gold Cup’s 17th edition, the U.S. required an 88th minute equaliser from Brandon Vázquez to salvage a 1-1 draw with Jamaica at Soldier Field.
Then, on Wednesday night, B.J. Callaghan’s side ran riot, demolishing St Kitts & Nevis 6-0 in St. Louis, recording the United States’ joint-biggest Gold Cup victory of all-time.
Jesús Ferreira scored his second international hat-trick, Đorđe Mihailović marked his first international start for four years with a brace while Bryan Reynolds celebrated his birthday by bagging a screamer from long-range.
This emphatic victory leaves USA top of the group, above Jamaica on goal difference (+6 compared to +3), needing to win again and, potentially, win well in Charlotte to ensure they hold onto first place.
Trinidad & Tobago aren’t out of the picture, although they must win this clash in North Carolina if they’re to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2015.
However, on Wednesday’s T&T’s limitations were clear for all to see, swatted aside 4-1 by Jamaica at CityPark, with Andre Rampersad’s impudent flick shortly after half time scant consolation.
So, Angus Eve team kick off in third, which is where they’re likely to remain.
Trinidad & Tobago did famously beat USA 2-0 in October 2017 in Couva, a result that infamously ensured the United States did not qualify for the World Cup.
However, the Soca Warriors have never beaten the U.S. on American soil, losing their last 13 encounters by an aggregate score of 40-3.
So, the home crowd at Bank of America Stadium are likely to have a win to celebrate, with USA scoring enough goals to keep Jamaica at bay.
United States team news
B. J. Callaghan rotated for the mid-week win over St Kitts, with Sean Johnson getting a rare start in goal, while Bryan Reynolds, Jalen Neal, DeJuan Jones and Gianluca Busio all also came into the team.
Đorđe Mihailović’s brace should see him keep his place, linking up well with hat-trick hero Jesús Ferreira.
With a quarter-final in Cincinnati a week away, assuming the US don’t lose this match, there’s little need for heavy rotation.
Matt Turner will be back in goal, donning the armband, with John Tolkin and, potentially, DeAndre Yedlin returning at full-back.
Miles Robinson has been nursing an injury since the Nations League semi-final Tres a Cero win over Mexico, so is being wrapped up in cotton wool and preserved for the knockout rounds.
Predicted XI (4-3-3): Turner; Reynolds, Miazga, Neal, Tolkin; Sands, Soñora, Mihailović; Zendejas, Ferreira, Cowell.
Trinidad and Tobago team news
Angus Eve switched to a back five against Jamaica on Wednesday and, despite the fact his team need to win this one, could stick with that here.
Levi García, who scored 18 goals for Greek Super League champions AEK Athens last season, will remain their talisman.
In goal, Nicklas Frenderup could be in for another busy night, having usurped long-standing number one Marvin Phillip recently.
Predicted XI (4-5-1): Frenderup; A. Jones, Bateau, David, Moses, Hodge; Hackshaw, Rampersad, Auvray, Fortune; García.
