Despite becoming a more dominate side in recent years, Denmark have not had too much success at the World Cup.

They did not qualify for the tournament until 1986 in Mexico when they were drawn alongside West Germany, Scotland and Uruguay. During that tournament they won all three of their group games, picking up a shock 2-0 win over West Germany. They were then beaten 5-1 by Spain in the Round of 16.

Denmark failed to qualify for the following two tournaments but returned in 1998 where they reached the quarter-finals for the first time in their history. Following their moderate success in 1998, Denmark reached the Round of 16 in 2002, the Group Stage in 2010 and the Round of 16 in 2018.

They have been placed in a group with France, Australia and Tunisia for the upcoming WC and are expected to make it out of their group.

Denmark World Cup Predictions

World Cup betting tips

Denmark have a history of good performances at major tournaments – the most notable being their 1992 European Championship triumph. With players such as Christian Eriksen, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Andreas Christensen and Mikkel Damsgaard, they are capable of pulling off notable upsets but they lack the firepower to beat big sides on a regular basis. Expect them to compete around the quarter-finals.

Manager

Kasper Hjulmand

Kasper Hjulmand was appointed Denmark manager in August of 2020. He had previously taken charge of Danish side Nordsjaelland and FSV Mainz.

He has since guided Denmark to the semi-finals of Euro 2020, where they were knocked out by England. This was Denmark’s joint-second best finish at the tournament – previously reaching the semis in 1984 and winning it in 1992.

Hjulmand is a versatile manager who has used a number of different systems during his time in charge of Denmark. However, he does prefer to use a three-back formation in the bigger games, playing it throughout most of Euro 2020 and in their recent Nations League win over France.

Record

Most recent: 2018

Best achievement: Quarter-finals (1998)

World Ranking: 10

Key players

Christian Eriksen

Denmark have a number of quality options in their ranks. Kasper Schmeichel is a top goalkeeper, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is playing some superb football for Tottenham and Mikkel Damsgaard caught the eye of many top European clubs at Euro 2020. However, his career has since stagnated somewhat.

But Denmark’s MVP still remains Christian Eriksen. The midfielder collapsed at Euro 2020 but has thankfully recovered and now looks back to his best in a deep-lying playmaker role for Manchester United.

For Denmark, meanwhile, Eriksen is one of the key leaders on the pitch. He has scored 38 and assisted 26 in 115 outings for his country and will be pivotal to any success Denmark have this winter.

Fan expectation for Denmark in the World Cup

Joe Short spoke to 101 and gave his opinion on how Denmark will do: “Denmark have a pretty tricky group but boss Kasper Hjulmand will be confident of getting his side into the knockout stage. They’re effectively in a tussle with Australia for that second place behind France – although the recent 2-0 Nations League win over Les Bleus hints that the Danes could pinch top spot here. Hjulmand’s set-up is effectively the same as at Euro 2020. A 4-3-3 formation with bombing full-backs, a stronghold midfield marshalled by Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Thomas Delaney, a young, exciting forward line, and Christian Eriksen acting as a metronome.

“If they finish second in Group D they’ll probably face Argentina in the last-16, which would be no easy ride for Lionel Messi and co. I genuinely think the Danes could impress here. They’re arguably better than they were in the summer of 2021.

On Denmark’s key player, he added: “All eyes will be on Christian Eriksen this winter but he can only operate with the freedom he does by having support from Thomas Delaney and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg. Højbjerg in particular has the vital role of dropping across to cover the defence, much like Kalvin Phillips does with England. Delaney is less defensive than Højbjerg, less attack-minded than Eriksen. But he is often the one providing the ball to overlapping full-backs, who swing it into the box for Kasper Dolberg – or perhaps the big man Andreas Cornelius – to head home.

On Denmark’s player to watch, Short said: “Denmark have a wave of young talent coming through and 22-year-old Mikkel Damsgaard – the guy who scared England with that stinging free-kick in the Euros semi-final – is the real spark of this attack. He might only be steadily making his way into the Brentford XI but this could be another top tournament for the Dane. Another youngster to keep an eye on is Rasmus Højlund. The 19-year-old broke into the F.C. Copenhagen first team two years ago, got his move to Sturm Graz in January and proved so effective that Atalanta picked him up in the summer. At 6ft 4in Højlund still needs to pad out a little bit, but he’s beginning to hold his own against much more experienced defenders.”

101′s Denmark World Cup Tip

Denmark can be backed at 28/1 to win the World Cup and at 2/1 to reach the quarter-finals with bet365.

Given their group, it seems likely they will at least reach the round of 16, but their spot in the quarters will very much depend on who they draw in the Round of 16. It is hard to see the Danes making it past the last-eight.
