England are likely to be without both James Maddison and Kyle Walker for their first game against Iran.
Both players have been struggling with injuries and these are set to keep them sidelined for Monday’s match.
Maddison picked up a knee injury in Leicester’s final match before the tournament away at West Ham.
The injury is not thought to be serious but clearly, some doubts are there over the issue and he is not expected to feature against Iran.
Meanwhile, Kyle Walker has been managing a long-term groin injury which has seen him miss Man City’s last 12 matches.
Southgate took a chance on selecting the 32-year-old given the fact he has been sidelined since the start of October.
The defender has already ruled himself out of the opening match, however, he was involved in training this morning.
This means that Kieran Trippier is almost a shoo-in to start on Monday.
Walker told ITV: “It depends on the coach.
“I think for the first game it’s a bit too short. But after that, I’ll be fine and I’ll be ready to play.”
