Match preview

It’s a rivalry reignited when Ghana and Uruguay meet 12 years after the infamous night in South Africa that saw the Black Stars head out of the competition in the quarter-finals with them now meeting in a potential winner takes all battle in Qatar.

If Ghana are to head through, a point could be all they need. Simply put, they are two points clear of South Korea and Uruguay already and they will now need to avoid defeat and hope that Portugal beat South Korea.

Ghana can also finish top of the group if they can beat Uruguay here and if South Korea defeat Portugal, but only if these games see Ghana overturn a goals difference of four goals over Portugal. This seems unlikely with Portugal expected to beat South Korea.

As for Uruguay, they will need to beat Ghana here and hope that Portugal beat South Korea or draw that game too. Uruguay cannot finish top of the group with a five-point gap on the Group H leaders, but second can still be secured.

This game does spark up a rivalry formed back at South Africa 2010 when Luis Suarez punched the ball away from the net to stop a certain goal in the 120th minute. Uruguay went on to brutally and unfairly win on penalties 12 years ago.
