Iran have not had much success at the World Cup. They first appeared at the tournament in 1978 but were knocked out in the first round after drawing one and losing two.
They then had to wait two years before making it back to the competition, this time being knocked out of the group stage after picking up just one win, which happened to come against the USA.
Iran have since become a more regular feature at the World Cup, competing in 2006, 2014 and 2018. However, they have never made it past the group stage and have won just two games.
They were drawn in a group with one of the tournament favourites England, along with USA and Wales, making them favourites to finish rock bottom.

Iran World Cup Predictions
World Cup betting tips
Iran have a tough group after being drawn with England, USA and Wales, so their chances of qualifying for the knockouts are pretty slim. Add to that that they have only one two games in their World Cup history – one against the USA in 1998 and the other against Morocco in 2018 – and it is almost unthinkable that they will qualify from the group.

Manager
Carlos Queiroz
A familiar face in world football, Queiroz first took charge of Iran in April 2011 and stayed in his post until January of 2018.
During that time, he took his side to the 2018 World Cup were they caused a major upset by drawing with Portugal. Iran were also at the 2014 World Cup under Queiroz, but had less success on that occasion.
After leaving Iran, Queiroz had a brief spell with Egypt where he reached the 2022 African Cup of Nations final. But he has now returned to Iran to take charge of third World Cup in a row.

Key players
Sardar Azmoun
Azmoun was handed his Iran debut by Queiroz in 2014 and he has gone on to become one of their all-time top scorers.
The striker has netted 41 times in 65 outings for Iran, which is a sensational record. However, he does not have much experience at the World Cup, only making three appearances so far and has courted controversy which could potentially put his involvement in doubt.
Fan expectation for Iran in the World Cup
Arya Allahverdi, part of Iran’s GolBezan podcast, spoke to 101 about how Iran will get on at the World Cup.
On Carlos Queiroz, he said: “A lot of fans are happy, I’m happy, I think he’s the right man to takeover. He knows our football really well.”
On Iran’s key player, he told 101: “Sardar Azmoun plays for Leverkusen, he’s obviously a good player for the national team as well, scored a lot of goals. I think he’s a fourth top goal scorer of all time now you know, he’s a very good player but needs to play more regularly at club level.”
And on how Iran will fare in their group, he had this to say: “The team has kind of transformed so much over the last year, last 2-3 years, we kind of don’t talk about that as much as we probably should. But I think there is that kind of side, ye we are an experienced team, been to two World Cups, USA haven’t, Wales haven’t. We’re a much more experienced team in this group then maybe we would have been in 2018.”
101′s Iran World Cup Tip
Iran can be backed with bet365 at 4/1 to make it out of their group, which includes Wales, England and the USA.
Given Iran have never made it out of a group stage at a World Cup, it may be a long shot, but Wales and the USA also have little experience in the tournament so it may be worth a punt.
