Match preview

Portugal are already into the knockout rounds ahead of a match with South Korea this Friday in the final group game of Group H with the Euro 2016 winners set to top the group if they can get just a point in this one.

Portugal managed to defeat Uruguay 2-0 in the last game to send themselves through to the knockout rounds after two goals from Bruno Fernandes. One was a penalty, and the other saw him net from a cross that, according to the goals panel, did not touch Cristiano Ronaldo and is therefore Fernandes’ goal.

Portugal now have a goals difference advantage over Ghana of three goals, and the only way they don’t finish top is if they lose here, while Ghana beat Uruguay and overturn that goals difference margin.

Cristiano Ronaldo has still scored at this World Cup after his penalty against Ghana now means he is the oldest and youngest goalscorer at a World Cup for his country. Portugal did survive by the skin of their teeth in that game, however, as Diogo Costa’s error in the dying seconds almost resulted in a goal for Ghana.

As for South Korea, their fightback against Ghana meant nothing in the end. They went 2-0 down but eventually lost 3-2 after drawing level with two goals from Cho Gue-sung – both goals were scored within three minutes of each other during the second half.

South Korea can still head through, but they will need to win here and hope that Uruguay can defeat Ghana while not turning in a better goals difference come the end of the game
