Match preview

Will France’s perfect record at this World Cup continue?

Having hammered Australia 4-1 in their opener, Didier Deschamps’ side edged out Denmark 2-1 on Saturday, moving clear at the top of Group B.

Kylian Mbappé scoring a pair of delightful goals at Stadium 974, the latter coming just three minutes from time.

Just once before have les Bleus won all three World Cup group games, this coming in 1998, featuring a 2-1 victory over Denmark, claiming this trophy for the very first time back then.

France only need a point to secure top spot if Australia win simultaneously and there’s a goal difference swing of 6+; this seems unlikely!

So, with Deschamps expected to make changes, can Tunisia beat the country they claimed independence from 66 years ago?

At the weekend, Jalel Kadri’s side were beaten 1-0 by Australia, rarely threatening at any point in that one.

So, Tunisia must win here and hope the other game is a draw, or Denmark prevail by a smaller margin than they do.

It’s a big ask, but can the North African nation claim just their third World Cup victory in this one at Education City Stadium?

Tunisia team news

Jalel Kadri made just one change for the Australia game, with Naïm Sliti displacing Anis Ben Slimane.

However, after a very poor display, talisman Wahbi Khazri is likely to start for the first time at this tournament.

Manchester United wonder-kid Hannibal Mejbri, currently on loan at Birmingham, will remain in reserve.

Predicted XI (5-4-1): Dahmen; Dräger, Talbi, Meriah, Bronn, Abdi; Skhiri, Laïdouni, Khazri, Msakni; Jebali.

France team news

With top spot almost certainly secured, expect Didier Deschamps to make wholesale changes.

Jules Koundé is the only les Bleus player one booking away from sitting out a round of 16 tie, so don’t expect to see him.

Raphaël Varane managed 75 minutes against Denmark as he eases back in after injury.

Theo Hernandez will continue at left-back after his big brother Lucas suffered an horrific injury against Australia.

William Saliba could see his first action of the tournament, while Matteo Guendouzi, Eduardo Camavinga, Marcus Thuram and Kingsley Coman could all also be rotated in.

In goal, assuming he features, Hugo Lloris will equal Lilian Thuram’s record of 142 caps, while Olivier Giroud needs just one goal to become France’s leading scorer of all-time.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Pavard, Saliba, Konaté, T Hernandez; Camavinga, Guendouzi, Thuram, Griezmann, Coman; Giroud.
