Middlesbrough vs Coventry City match preview

Two sides separated by just a single place in the Championship table are set to lock horns in a final day clash at the Riverside Stadium on Monday, May 8th.

The matchup in question will see Middlesbrough act as hosts, in a meeting with Coventry City.

Beginning with the former, Boro, for their part, have long secured the club’s place in the upcoming promotion playoffs.

Despite being condemned to defeat in each of their last two outings, the stellar form showcased by Michael Carrick’s troops in the months prior means that they are guaranteed a 4th-placed finish come the close of proceedings later today.

And yet, boss Carrick nevertheless faces a major decision when it comes to his plans for this evening’s action.

Will the former Manchester United midfielder simply rest his star performers so as to avoid any potential injuries leading into the playoffs?

Upcoming opponents Coventry, for one, will no doubt be hopeful of the former coming to fruition.

The Sky Blues currently sit a place back of Middlesbrough in the standings in England’s 2nd tier, looking clear favourites to join Boro and Luton Town as the third of four sides still in with a shot at promotion.

Mark Robins’ troops, though, will be altogether wary of the possibility of a last-gasp shake-up, whilst just three points clear of the playoff-chasing pack.

Coventry, to their credit, have enjoyed a much more fruitful time of things of late than their upcoming opponents, unbeaten in six, and fresh off back-to-back wins, as well as three in four.

Most recently, a home meeting with Birmingham City saw top scorer Viktor Gyokeres find the net, too, en route to a comfortable 2-0 triumph.

As Robins and co. continue to prove their ability to produce results when it matters most, we at 101 are therefore backing Coventry to ultimately get the job done later today, in emerging from the Riverside with, at the very least, a share of the spoils.
