Match preview

A resurgent Sunderland outfit with sights set firmly on the promotion playoff spots will act as hosts, in a Championship showdown with stuttering Swansea City on Saturday, January 14th.

The Black Cats, of course, have recovered from a dismal opening to the campaign in altogether impressive fashion over the course of the last couple of months.

All told, dating back to the far side of the World Cup break, Tony Mowbray’s troops have notched five wins from eight across all competitions, slipping to defeat on just a solitary occasion in the process.

Their most recent league outing did prove somewhat underwhelming, as, despite, dominating proceedings, a Ross Stewart equaliser was required to salvage a point at relegation-battling Blackpool.

After falling behind once more, Mowbray and co. looked headed for the FA Cup exit door, at the hands of League One Shrewsbury Town.

This, however, all changed deep into injury time, when Ross Stewart’s 92nd-minute equaliser was added to by Luke O’Nien, to keep Sunderland’s FA Cup campaign alive and kicking.

Upcoming opponents Swansea City, on the other hand, have endured an altogether less productive last couple of weeks.

Their own FA Cup endeavours gave rise to a 1-1 stalemate last time out, as Joel Piroe’s early opener was cancelled out by Antoine Semenyo to set up a third-round replay with Bristol City.

Back on the league front, meanwhile, this result was preceded by defeat at the Liberty Stadium.

Oli Cooper’s finish just shy of the half-hour mark ultimately proved to be little more than a consolation, en route to a hard-fought loss at the hands of table-topping Burnley.

After previously establishing themselves at the heart of the promotion playoff battle, Swansea, as a result, now sit in a lowly 15th spot, with just a solitary win on the board since late October.

And we at 101 only envision the Swans’ woes being added to ever further on Saturday, backing hosts Sunderland to ultimately emerge on the right side of the result at the Stadium of Light.
