Former Aston Villa manager and Merseyside icon Steven Gerrard may not be unemployed for long after reports have emerged linking the legend with the Polish national team vacancy.
It was another short international cycle at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar for Poland under manager Czeslaw Michniewicz after reaching the round of 16 for the first time since 1986 before being ousted by eventual finalist France. Despite the existence of top-class players the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Piotr Zieliński, Biało-czerwoni has failed to make good on a continuous crop of talented players that ply their trade in Europe’s top leagues, with the Polish Football Federation deciding to not renew terms with Michniewicz.
Polish FA president Cezary Kulesza recently made contact with Gerrard just after the new year, with the also Liverpool Echo citing reports from Polish outlet Meczyki that detail Kulesza’s approach for the 42-year-old.

Gerrard certainly does not have a clear path to the job, however, with Herve Renard, Vladimir Petkovic, and Paulo Bento coming in as other listed candidates said in the mix, while Raków Częstochowa’s Marek Papszun and Górnik Zabrze’s Jan Urban also on the managerial shortlist.
It is unlikely that Poland would turn to Gerrard given the other available options, however, given his relative inexperience in comparison to Renard, Petković, and Bento. Certainly, the manner in which Villa failed to kick on under Gerrard’s watch after his credible period at Ibrox with Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers does not hold his CV head and shoulders above the rest either.
For Gerrard, a return to the technical area may still be just out of reach for the time being.
