GK: Jan Oblak (Club Atlético de Madrid)

A red card nearly interrupted Atlético Madrid’s chances of securing a narrow 1-0 win on the road against Galician outfit Celta Vigo, but star goalkeeper Jan Oblak was one of a number of key performers in the second half that secured all three points for Diego Simeone’s men away from home.

RB: Fabien Centonze (Football Club de Nantes)

French full-back Fabien Centonze has been a key catalyst for Brittany-based Nantes this season since his arrival from FC Metz, with another strong performance at the weekend in a local derby against high-flying Lorient in the run-up to a massive mid-week fixture in the Europa League against Juventus.

CB: Timo Hübers (1. Fußball-Club Köln)

The first of two Köln players to feature in the team of the week, German defender Timo Hübers was a rock at the back for Steffen Baumgart during the club’s 3-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt while snapping Die Adler’s unbeaten run in the league to see the club now sit just one point outside the top half.

CB: Jaka Bijol (Udinese Calcio)

Though there was no clean sheet to celebrate for home-side Udinese at the weekend, the Friulian outfit fought hard to earn a draw against visiting Sassuolo and have Slovenian international defender Jaka Bijol to thank not just for his efforts in defense, but for his goal and assist that was decisive on the day for Le Zebrette.

LB: Jeremie Frimpong (Bayer 04 Leverkusen)

Xabi Alonso’s revolution at Bayer Leverkusen is back on track after a temporary slip in form, with Dutch international full-back Jeremie Frimpong resuming his attacking influence under the Spanish tactician with a brace of assists during Die Werkselfs’s 3-1 win at struggling Hoffenheim.

CM: Marshall Munetsi (Stade de Reims)

Will Still’s impressive Stade de Reims side has done it again at the weekend while continuing their rich vein of form across an impressive undefeated run in the north of France after a consummate 4-0 thrashing of Troyes in a derby win at home, with midfielder Marshall Munetsi bagging a goal and an assist in the process.

CM: Ellyes Skhiri (1. Fußball-Club Köln)

CAM: Rodri (Real Betis Balompié)

Sevilla-based Real Betis continue to re-establish themselves on the La Liga landscape this season and can no doubt look to this weekend’s 3-2 win against Almería as evidence they can dig deep to garner results, with midfielder Rodri bagging a goal and an assist to guarantee Betis sit fifth going into next weekend.

RW: Lee Jae-Sung (1.Fußball-und Sport-Verein Mainz)

Mainz hopes to find their form in 2023 and look to have gotten closer to results more common of last season, especially at home, after a 3-1 win against Bavarian outfit Augsburg on Saturday, with South Korean forward Lee Jae-Sung adding a brace for Bo Svensson’s side who extended the gap between the bottom three and are now in sight of the top-half.

LW: Théo Bongonda (Cádiz Club de Fútbol)

The coast of Andalucia will no doubt be enjoying happier times for a moment after Cádiz earned a massive three points at home against visiting Girona to see the club climb out of the bottom three after a 2-0 win, with Congolese winger Théo Bongonda at the ready with a brace of assists on a critical Friday night for the club.

CF: Wissam Ben Yedder (Association Sportive de Monaco Football Club)

AS Monaco put in one of the performances of the weekend anywhere on the continent after the Monagasque outfit bested table-topping Paris Saint-Germain at Stade Louis II in an impressive 3-1 win, with French international striker Wissam Ben Yedder bagging a brace and adding a further assist to consign the Parisians to another defeat in recent weeks.
