The UEFA Champions League quarter-finals kick off on Tuesday night with the champions of England facing the champions of Germany.

Manchester City and Bayern Munich have previously met six times, all coming between 2011 and 2014 in the group stages, with this their first-ever knockout phase clash.

This article looks back at their three most memorable meetings.

Manchester City vs Bayern Munich: Head to head Champions League record

Manchester City wins: 3. Bayern Munich wins: 3.

Manchester City vs Bayern Munich: UEFA Champions League meetings

2014: Bayern Munich 1-0 Manchester City & Manchester City 3-2 Bayern Munich.

2013: Manchester City 1-3 Bayern Munich & Bayern Munich 2-3 Manchester City.

2014: Manchester City 3-2 Bayern Munich

Manchester City and Bayern Munich last went head-to-head in November 2014, serving up an absolute classic at the Etihad.

Back then, the Citizens had made a calamitous start to their campaign, accumulating just two points from four matches, most-recently suffering a shock 2-1 home defeat at the hands of CSKA Moscow.

So, Manuel Pellegrini’s team simply needed to win their final two group games to have any chance of reaching the round of 16.

Sergio Agüero gave them the perfect start in this crunch clash, converting a spot-kick, but quick-fire goals from Xabi Alonso and Robert Lewandowski saw Bayern lead 2-1 at the break.

The Bavarian giants still led with just five minutes remaining, as Man City were seemingly set to slump out of Europe.

Up step Agüero who levelled late on before, in stoppage time, he completed his hat-trick by poking a dramatic winner past Manuel Neuer.

A fortnight later, goals from Samir Nasri and Pablo Zabaleta saw Man City beat Roma at Stadio Olimpico, thereby securing a last 16 spot against all odds.

2013: Bayern Munich 2-3 Manchester City

12 months earlier, they were also in the same group, with Bayern prevailing 3-1 at the City of Manchester Stadium on matchday two.

Thus, when they reconvened in Bavarian in the final game, the Sky Blues had to better that scoreline to take top spot; a tall order.

This task looked very unlikely when, after just 12 minutes, Bayern led 2-0, with Thomas Müller and Mario Götze the scorers.

However, the Citizens pulled off a remarkable comeback against the then reigning European Champions, winning 3-2.

David Silva halved the deficit, Aleksandar Kolarov smashed home a penalty before James Milner completed the turnaround.

Back then, Man City reached the knockout phase for the very first time, and they’ve certainly come along way in the subsequent decade.

2011: Bayern Munich 2-0 Manchester City

Back in 2011, Manchester City were making their Champions League debut, with their only previous European Cup tie coming in 1968, beaten 2-1 by Fenerbahçe.

Roberto Mancini’s side were held to a 1-1 draw by Napoli in their opener, before this humbling 2-0 defeat in Munich.

Mario Gómez’s quick-fire brace, scoring twice in just seven minutes, saw Bayern to a 2-0 victory.

This game is most well-known for being the night Carlos Tevez refused to warm up as a substitute.

He was subsequently suspended by the club, spent the next six months back in Argentina playing golf, before returning in style by scoring a hat-trick at Norwich in April.

12 years ago, Man City did beat Bayern 2-0 in the reverse fixture, but still dropped into the Europa League.
