German giants Bayern Munich advanced to the quarterfinals of the Champions League while continuing to be a bug bear in the face of Ligue 1 headliner Paris Saint-Germain after a 2-0 win in Bavaria in the second leg, dispatching the French champions from Europe’s premier club competition.

The first big chance of the match came in the 32nd minute when German wunderkind Jamal Musiala did well to test Italian international Gianluigi Donnarumma with a low drive destined for the past corner only for the former AC Milan standout to parry away with a strong hand after Musiala combined well with Alphonso Davies to find enough space in the box.

PSG nearly took the lead in the 39th minute if not for a goal-line save by Dutch international center-back Matthijs de Ligt denying Portuguese midfielder Vitinha who could not find the back of a wide-open net from 12-yard-out after Yann Sommer clumsily gave possession away in the box.

Bayern thought they took a 1-0 lead on the night early in the second half after club icon Thomas Müller attempted to play Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s glancing header, but VAR overturned the goal on account of offside. Still, the Bavarians had emerged from the halftime interval on the front foot and looking to strike a killer blow.

The Germans soon after confirmed their 2-0 aggregate advantage in the tie after PSG shot themselves in the foot after Marco Verratti was caught in possession just outside of the box before Leon Goretzka found Choupo-Moting free and clear to slot home from close range.

Sergio Ramos nearly got PSG back in the tie moments later after the former Real Madrid star headed strongly back across the face of goal at the far post after Lionel Messi’s corner found the Spanish defender who rose highest, but Sommer parried away expertly to deny the Parisian’s a lifeline.

Once again PSG would ultimately fall short in Europe despite their star-studded squad, with Bayern Munich stunting the Parisian’s chances of exacting revenge after their finals loss. With Mbappe, Messi, and Neymar by proxy falling short, questions will be asked about what comes next for PSG, while many will continue to look at Bayern as one of the ultimate tournament favorites.
