Tottenham youngster Pape Matar Sarr given possible Serie A escape route as Salernitana consider loan move

There are those in and around Tottenham Hotspur FC, either inside the club or just supporters of it, that continue to question what the next step is for the north London side as Spurs have rapidly fallen away from the heights many would have hoped they would achieve in recent years, with the future of Antonio Conte remaining uncertain.

How Tottenham intends to spend to improve the senior setup under the experienced Italian manager remains to be seen, but one player in the first-team ranks that could do with time away from the English capital is Senegalese international midfielder Pape Matar Sarr.

Highly touted during a breakout season with Ligue 1 outfit FC Metz during the 2020-21 campaign, Tottenham swooped in to secure his signature in the 2021 summer transfer window but then immediately loaned back to the northern French club for the 2021-22 season with minutes in London sure to be limited. But despite being back at the club this season, Sarr did not make his debut until the recent 2-0 win against Aston Villa despite already being an established Senegalese international and recent African Cup of Nations winner.

Though Conte lacks trusted midfield options currently, Sarr is still in danger of regression when it comes to his development, with Serie A outfit Salernitana now eyeing up a possible loan move for the 20-year-old according to football insider Fabrizio Romano.

Club sporting director and former Italian international goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis shed light on the situation surrounding the interest from I Granata, stating “Sarr is the kind of player we need, he has the skills we want in that position.”

Currently sitting midtable and comfortably outside of the relegation zone, Salernitana has hit a rough patch of form of late (0-1-3) and lacks depth in certain areas of the pitch, including midfield, and Sarr could certainly jump at the chance of receiving minutes as a starter under manager Davide Nicola.
