Israel vs Andorra match preview

After claiming a vital, last-gasp victory on Friday night, will Israel get three more points on the board here?

Three nights ago, Alon Hazan’s side looked set to suffer a massively damaging defeat away to Group I’s minnows Belarus, 1-0 down with just five minutes remaining.

Shon Weissman then equalised from the penalty spot before, in the 92nd minute, Oscar Gloukh snatched a winner that was dramatic and important in equal measure.

This was actually Israel’s first win of Euro 2024 qualifying, following a disappointing 1-1 draw with Kosovo in Tel Aviv and a 3-0 humbling in Switzerland back in March.

The Blues and Whites have never qualified for a major tournament since gaining UEFA membership over three decades ago, but will feel they have a golden chance to qualify via this wide-open group.

Switzerland are likely to take top spot, with Israel and Romania the leading candidates to join them at the Euros, making their head-to-head encounters on 9 September and 18 November potentially decisive.

Andorra meantime held Kosovo to a 1-1 draw in their last away game in March, with Albert Rosas bagging a famous equaliser in Pristina.

However, on Friday, los Tricolors could not get another rare result, beaten 2-1 by Switzerland at Estadi Nacional, with Márcio Vieira’s goal unable to spark a second half comeback.

Koldo Álvarez’s team have won just five of their 45 competitive outings in the last six years, these wins coming over fellow-minnows Liechtenstein, San Marino and Moldova.

So, those inside Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem should be celebrating a home win.

Israel team news

Shon Weissman and Dolev Haziza were both introduced at half time against Belarus, helping turn the scoreline around, with both therefore set to start this time.

Manor Solomon, who spent last season at Fulham, is a guaranteed starter, while captain Eli Dasa will win his 56th cap.

Andorra team news

Márcio Vieira’s goal as a substitute against Switzerland could earn him a start here.

Captain Ildefons Lima, who’s now 43 years old, isn’t likely to add to his 135 caps, not from the start at least.
