Liechtenstein vs Slovakia match preview

Will Slovakia’s excellent start to Euro 2024 qualifying continue?

On Saturday night, the Falcons impressively won 2-1 in Iceland, with Juraj Kucka and Tomáš Suslov the scorers at Laugardalsvöllur.

That made it back-to-back wins for Francesco Calzona’s team against direct-qualification rivals, also beating Bosnia in Bratislava back in March, having only managed a goalless draw with Luxembourg on matchday one.

This all means Slovakia are currently occupying the all-important second spot, three points clear of Luxembourg and enjoying a four point cushion over Iceland and Bosnia.

The Representatives’ next fixture is at home to Portugal so, as they aiming to qualify for a third successive Euros, Slovakia cannot afford to drop points in Vaduz.

This seems unlikely as Liechtenstein continue to be Group J’s whipping boys.

That made it three defeats out of three, having been swatted aside 4-0 by Portugal and 7-0 by Iceland in March.

New Head Coach Konrad Fünfstück has taken over a side who’ve now lost 13 successive competitive fixtures, without a win in 22 matches, dating back to September 2020.

In terms of qualifiers, Liechtenstein’s most-recent victory came in Moldova nine years ago, losing 34 of 38 outings since then.

An emphatic away win at Rheinpark Stadion is highly likely.

Liechtenstein team news

Captain Nicolas Hasler will win his 95th cap in midfield, still 37 short of Peter Jehle national record.

Slovakia team news

Martin Dúbravka will continue in goal, chosen over Marek Rodák.

Talismanic centre-back Milan Škriniar did start in Reykjavík on Saturday, a major boost, but it remains to be seen if the defender, set to depart Inter this summer, will feature here too.

Marek Hamšík retired from international football in November last year, but came out of retirement for Saturday’s win in Iceland, so could earn a record-extending 138th cap in Vaduz.
