Martinique vs Puerto Rico match preview

After causing an enormous upset in Saturday night’s prelim semi-final, can Puerto Rico do it again?

El Huracán Azul went into their meeting with Suriname as huge underdogs, but held out for a goalless draw, meaning penalties were required in Florida.

Ricardo Rivera, Leandro Antonetti, Roberto Ydrach and Gerald Díaz all held their nerve from 12 yards as Puerto Rico completed the shock, prevailing 4-3 in the shootout.

Charlie Trout’s team got into these prelims by finishing top of their League C group in March, beating minnows Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands both home and away.

Now, against all odds, Puerto Rico are only 90 minutes away from making their Gold Cup debut.

Martinique though will be seeking to shatter this fairytale, after they dumped out Saint Lucia on Friday.

Les Matinino have become Gold Cup regulars over the last decade, featuring in four of the last five editions, with Marc Collat’s team seeking to further improve that ratio here.

The reward on offer for both is a place in CONCACAF Gold Cup Group C, alongside El Salvador, Panama and Costa Rica.

So, can Puerto Rica cause another major upset at DRV PNK Stadium, or will Martinique be simply too strong?
