Norway vs Cyprus match preview

Norway’s start to this qualification campaign has been nothing short of disastrous, so they are in desperate need of a victory here.

On Saturday, the Lions took on Scotland in Oslo in a must win game, and they were on course to achieve this when Erling Braut HÃ¥land smashed home a penalty on the hour mark, breaking the deadlock.

Norway still led 1-0 with less than three minutes to play, only for Scotland to score twice in under 100 seconds, snatching the most unlikely of smash-and-grab victories you’re ever likely to see.

This defeat is an indisputable disaster for Ståle Solbakken’s side, who now have just one point on the board, beaten 3-0 by Spain in their opener before only managing a draw with Georgia in Batumi.

Norway have not qualified for any major tournament since Euro 2000, desperately hoping the stars in their ranks can change that fact this year.

Now that a top two finish in Group A appears a long-shot, Solbakken’s team may be looking to the safety net that is a play-off place, which they’re guaranteed via the UEFA Nations League.

Cyprus are yet to get off the mark in Euro 2024 qualifying and, in a generally very competitive section, this could remain the case.

Temur Ketsbaia’s team were swatted aside in Glasgow on matchday one, before a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Georgia in Larnaca on Saturday, conceding late after Ioannis Pittas had equalised from the penalty spot.

Overall, Cyprus have won just four of their last 29 competitive fixtures, their most-recent away win coming in Kazakhstan in October 2019.

So, despite Norway’s ongoing issues, they’ll surely prevail in this friendly at Ullevål Stadion.

Norway team news

Erling Braut HÃ¥land bagged his 22nd international goal, doing so in just 24 caps, on Saturday, ultimately in vain.

Alexander Sørloth will join him in the front three, although Mohamed Elyounoussi could come in for Ola Solbakken on the left-wing.

Captain Martin Ødegaard picked up his 50th cap at the weekend, although he’s only scored twice for his country to date, netting against Romania in 2019 and Slovakia last year.

Cyprus team news

St Mirren’s Alex Gogić comically gave away Georgia’s opener at the weekend, but he’ll keep his place in defence.

At the age of 32, Joël Mall made his senior international debut in goal on Saturday, so will he start again?

With Pieros Sotiriou, Andronikos Kakoullis and Georgios Efrem sidelined, Marinos Tzionis could continue to lead the line, chosen as Ioannis Pittas’ strike partner.
