South Africa vs Morocco match preview

Both of these two teams have already booked their spots at next year’s Africa Cup of Nations, making this a low-pressure fixture for both in Johannesburg.

Morocco were always likely to cruise through Group K and they have maximum points on the board, beating South Africa 2-1 in Rabat before a 2-0 victory over Liberia.

Also last year, the Atlas Lions became the first-ever African nation to reach the World Cup semi-finals, overcoming Canada, Belgium, Spain and Portugal before defeat to France in the last four.

Given all of this, Walid Regragui’s team will be amongst the favourites to win AFCON next January, dreaming of the country’s first tile since 1976.

South Africa meantime are the continent’s perennial underachievers.

Bafana Bafana have actually failed to qualify for four of the last seven AFCONs, ousted by minnows Sudan in the last qualification cycle.

So now, can South Africa claim a notable scalp at Soccer City, the stadium that hosted the World Cup Final itself 13 years ago?
