Bayer Leverkusen moved within three points of Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga title race with a 3-1 win over Bochum.

The reigning champions were not always convincing against a side sitting in the relegation play-off spot, but second-half goals from Victor Boniface and Amine Adli settled an entertaining contest.

Leverkusen took the lead in the 20th minute when Aleix Garcia’s fine side-foot finish from the edge of the area left an unsighted Timo Horn rooted to the spot.

But Bochum levelled just six minutes later through a wonderful volley from Felix Passlack, who showed superb skill to beat Lukas Hradecky after Georgios Masouras had initially been denied by the Leverkusen goalkeeper.

Boniface, though, restored Leverkusen’s advantage with a tap-in after Piero Hincapie turned a delivery to the far post from a free-kick back across goal and into his path.

The Nigeria forward looked to have a second when he finished off a wonderful team move with a dinked finish over Horn 10 minutes from the end of normal time.

That disappointment was short-lived, however, as Exequiel Palacios slid in Adli to seal victory after another excellently worked Leverkusen counter-attack.

Granit Xhaka saw an effort incredibly bounce off both posts in the second minute of injury time, but that only prevented Leverkusen from adding further gloss to the scoreline as they piled the pressure on Bayern ahead of their meeting with relegation-threatened St. Pauli on Saturday.
