Bayern Munich received a much-needed boost on the injury front on Wednesday, a day on from their Champions League loss to Inter Milan.

Davide Frattesi’s 88th-minute winner gave Inter a 2-1 victory in the quarter-final first leg at the Allianz Arena, leaving Bayern with a mountain to climb in next week’s second leg at San Siro.

Among the long list of absentees for Bayern was centre-back Dayot Upamecano, who returned from the recent international break with a knee injury that has kept him on the sidelines.

However, Bayern announced that the France international is now running again as he progresses towards a return to action.

Bayern’s defence was caught cold by an Inter counter in a frantic finish to the last-eight clash, Frattesi tucking home Carlos Augusto’s left-wing cross after Thomas Muller had levelled matters just over three minutes earlier.

On the winning goal, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said: “There’s a slight moment of loss of concentration in the marking, they use it really well, and then every pass afterwards is really well executed, which gives them a goal.”

Kompany was keen to stress the positives from the defeat, particularly after seeing his side create a host of chances in a first half they dominated prior to Lautaro Martinez’s stylish 38th-minute opener.

“We had a very good start to the game, the first half hour we were very dominant,” said Kompany. “We did have very big chances and big opportunities where I thought we probably could have scored one or even more goals.

“It [the second leg] won’t be the same game as this game, but if you just look at today with the amount of opportunities we had against a very strong defensive Inter Milan then we have to take that as a factor because usually when you get those chances we score two or three goals.

“It wouldn’t be the right thing to feel right now that this 2-1 was a reflection of us not being able to win this game. It’s not what happened. We still have full belief we can win there.”
