Bayern Munich missed out on the chance to go eight points clear in the Bundesliga title race as they were held to a 2-2 draw in a hugely entertaining Klassiker with Borussia Dortmund.
Though they were beaten 2-1 by Inter Milan in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday, Bayern had the opportunity to cement their command of the title fight after defending champions Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 0-0 draw by Union Berlin.
Having scored late on against Inter, Thomas Muller was picked from the start by Vincent Kompany for his final Klassiker for Bayern.
Bayern dominated the first half, but it was Dortmund who took the lead three minutes into the second when Maximilian Beier rounded off a counter-attack by heading home at the far post from point-blank range.
The hosts responded superbly, though, and appeared set to take all three points after former Dortmund man Raphael Guerreiro equalised with a cool finish into the bottom-right corner and Serge Gantry completed the turnaround with a fine individual effort.
But there was a twist in the tale 15 minutes from the end of normal time when Waldemar Anton tapped in on the rebound after Serhou Guirassy saw his bicycle kick kept out by Jonas Urbig.
Bayern stay six points ahead of Leverkusen with five games to play. Dortmund are six points adrift of the Champions League places.
Kompany’s men next travel to San Siro for the return leg with Inter on Wednesday. Their next league game sees Bayern visit lowly Heidenheim before matches with three more teams chasing Champions League football in Mainz, RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach.
