Franck Ribery believes Bayern Munich should give Thomas Muller a new contract amid reports they are set to allow him to leave the club.
Muller has spent his entire senior career with Bayern having made his debut in 2008.
He has won the Bundesliga 12 times and lifted the DFB-Pokal on six occasions. He has also claimed two Champions League titles and a pair of Club World Cups in his 18-year association with the club.
But his contract is set to expire at the end of season, with Bayern reportedly electing not to renew it, a move that Ribery sees as a mistake.
“Thomas is very important for the dressing room, he has a big influence,” Ribery told SportBild.
“Thomas has done so much for the club, for the city of Munich. If he wants to play for another year, then the club should give him this contract.”
Ribery also urged Bayern to poach star forward Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.
Wirtz, who has been sidelined since March 8 because of an ankle injury, has a contract with the reigning Bundesliga champions until the end of the 2026-27 season.
He is reportedly attracting interest from the likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid, but Ribery is adamant it is Bayern who need to prise him away from Leverkusen.
“If there’s any possibility, Bayern must sign Florian Wirtz,” said Ribery.
“[Jamal] Musiala and Wirtz can play very well together in a team. They’re alike because they both have incredible talent. But they’re not alike in their playing style.
“Good footballers always get along on the pitch. Maybe FC Bayern should adjust their system a bit, away from the traditional wingers.
“I would play with a true number nine and behind him in the half spaces with Wirtz and Musiala, a little bit further inside. Then the wings will still be open for strong attacking full-backs. That could work very well.”
