John McGinn savoured another “amazing” night for Aston Villa in the Champions League as the captain’s goal helped them beat Bologna 2-0.

Villa currently sit top of the league phase after winning their first three games during a dream start to their Champions League campaign.

McGinn’s free-kick set the Villans on their way in the second half before Jhon Duran sealed the victory to take them to nine points.

The Scot, who missed Matchday 2’s famous win over Bayern Munich earlier this month, was delighted with the professional performance from his side and says the sky is the limit under manager Unai Emery.

He told TNT Sports: “It is amazing. Obviously I missed out on the last night here at Villa Park [win against Bayern Munich] but three games in, three wins and most important for us is no goals conceded.

“We don’t want to stop here. It puts us in a great position. Some players came back and now we look really strong. What we are building here is amazing.”

Playing in the Champions League will be particularly special for McGinn, who joined the Midlands outfit while they were languishing in the Championship back in 2018.

The fan favourite added: “This is home for me. It is my seventh season here, we’ve had ups and downs. It has been a rollercoaster. Hopefully we can keep climbing.”

Villa are winning plaudits left, right and centre for their extraordinary transformation in two years since Emery’s appointment but midfielder Youri Tielemans says the Spanish boss still continues to demand improvements from the players.

The Belgian said: “The manager is really onto us. He wants us to keep raising the bar every game.

“I always try to improve myself. We had some really good work with the manager last year. He always gives us those challenges during the game, tonight we played a team who plays man to man and he challenged us to beat that.”

Villa travel to face Club Brugge on Matchday 4 in the Champions League and are back at Villa Park on Saturday to take on Bournemouth in the Premier League.
