Harry Kane has said Bayern Munich have felt a “good energy” and “hunger” because of new manager Vincent Kompany during their blistering start to the season.

England captain Kane scored four times – including three penalties – as Bayern thrashed Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 in their Champions League opener on Tuesday, although the Croatian side were only 3-2 behind when the striker scored his only goal not to come from the spot in the 57th minute at the Allianz Arena.

“We’ve come back with a good energy,” Kane told Prime Video Sport of the Bundesliga leaders, who have won all of their first six matches of 2024-25 in all competitions following the appointment of Kompany from Burnley in May.

“We’ve been hungry. You saw that straight away in pre-season with the new coach: everyone has a point to prove here and we’ve started the season that way.

“The way the coach wants us to press and be intense with and without the ball is important. We know we can dominate teams with the quality we have.”

Kane Champions League goals

Kane now has the most goals of any English player in Champions League history, moving three beyond Wayne Rooney’s total of 40.

“Whenever you’re in a conversation with Wayne Rooney, it means you’re doing something well,” said the 31-year-old. “He’s one of the greatest English players and one of the best players there was in the game. It’s a nice achievement.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever had three penalties in one game. It was a different feeling for me, but to score four goals is fantastic.

“To help the team in any way possible is important. Whether they’re penalties or normal finishes, I’ll take them all. It was a great night for us.”

“I keep all the balls after hat-tricks. The lads might be sick of signing them, but keep them coming. My son, Louis, loves playing football right now. He’s only three but I’ll take it home and put it next to his bed and he’ll be happy when he wakes up in the morning.”

Kane goals 2024-25

Former Tottenham talisman Kane also produced a hat-trick and an assist in Bayern’s 6-1 league win at Holstein Kiel on Saturday.

He now has 11 goals and three assists in seven appearances since August 16, including both goals in England’s 2-0 home win over Finland eight days ago.
