Borussia Dortmund have put nerves on edge by netting an early penalty against Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The German side trailed 4-0 heading into the second leg but were handed a lifeline early on when Wojciech Szczesny wiped former Brighton man Pascal Gross out inside the penalty box, leaving the referee no choice but to point to the penalty spot.

There was a lengthy VAR check to ensure the midfielder was not in an offside position when he started his run into the box, but it was confirmed and the penalty stood.

Serhou Guirassy was the man to step up to the spot and expertly dispatched his effort, sending Szczesny the wrong way and chipping down the middle.

It sparked a roar from the German crowd and a buzz of excitement could be felt with the game suddenly alive.

Dortmund need three more goals to force extra time in the tie but have started exactly how they will have wanted to.
