Former England internationals Ashley Cole and Joleon Lescott will be part of interim England boss Lee Carsley’s backroom staff.
The 50-year-old was asked to step up from the under-21s by the FA in the wake of Gareth Southgate’s resignation following England’s European Championship campaign, which saw them lose 2-1 to Spain in the final.

Tim Dittmer, The FA’s head of coaching, will also join Carsley’s temporary team as they prepare to take charge of England’s Nation’s League clash with the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on September 7 and against Finland at Wembley three days later.
Carsley was born in Birmingham but won 40 caps for the Republic of Ireland between 1997 and 2008, qualifying through his grandmother, who was born in County Cork.
Cole, who won 107 England caps and has coached at former club Chelsea in addition to Derby, Everton and currently Birmingham, Lescott, who represented England 26 times between 2007 and 2013 and Dittmer, himself a former Ireland under-19s keeper, were part of the Carsley’s team which guided England under-21s to glory at the 2023 European Championships.
Carsley has until Thursday (August 29) to name his first senior squad, though one player unlikely to feature is Jude Bellingham.
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti confirmed the 21-year-old has sustained a muscular injury in training and could miss several weeks.
Coaching departures from the FA
Southgate’s former goalkeeping coach Martyn Margetson has departed the FA after eight years, having helped the squad reach two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink also moves on as England strikers coach after 17 months working with the national team in the run up to and during Euro 2024.
Paul Nevin will take charge of England’s Elite League Squad on an interim basis as ELS head coach Ben Futcher has taken interim charge of the under-21s. Futcher will be supported by former England international Tom Huddlestone alongside Paul Williams and Sam Meek.
