Kobbie Mainoo seems set to make his return from injury in Manchester United’s Europa League quarter-final with Lyon.

Mainoo has not featured for United since their FA Cup win over Leicester City on February 7, having sustained a muscle injury in training the following week.

But the England midfielder was pictured in training on Wednesday ahead of United’s trip to Groupama Stadium for the first leg.

And he was subsequently named in United’s 23-man squad for the last-eight encounter, with the Europa League the Red Devils’ last hope of silverware this season.

United look set to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League for the first time in their history. They are 13th in the table with seven games to go, their next match a trip to Champions League-chasing Newcastle United on Sunday.

With the Europa League offering a direct route into Europe’s top club competition next season, lifting the trophy for the second time in their history is the priority for United.

A return for Mainoo would be a significant boost in providing the United midfield with the energy it has clearly lacked in his absence in recent weeks.

United are unbeaten in five matches with Lyon, winning three and drawing two.

Paulo Fonseca’s men are fifth in Ligue 1, two points behind third-placed Monaco, who occupy the final Champions League qualification place.
