Goalkeeper coach Hilario is set for a role in Thomas Tuchel’s England backroom staff after leaving Chelsea.
The BBC say the Portuguese coach, who has spent 16 years as a player and a coach with the Blues, has resigned from his role at Stamford Bridge ahead of joining up with the Three Lions.
Hilario worked with Tuchel while the German manager was Chelsea manager between 2021 and 2022.
It is indicated that the 49-year-old was open to a job share but the Premier League side were unhappy with that arrangement.
Martyn Margetson was England’s previoud goalkeeper coach but left his role when Gareth Southgate stepped down in July.
Hilario first joined Chelsea from Porto in 2004, spending the majority of his Blues career as back-up keeper and making 39 appearances.
The former Portugal international returned to Chelsea as part of Antonio Conte’s coaching staff in 2016 having left the club upon his retirement as a player in 2014.
Originally joining as assistant goalkeeper coach, he was then promoted to goalkeeper coach by Maurizio Sarri in 2018.
He remained in that role under subsequent bosses Frank Lampard, Tuchel, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino and Enzo Maresca.
German coach Tuchel was appointed as England’s manager in October and will officially begin work on January 1.
He has been tasked with delivering the Three Lions’ first major trophy since 1966 at the 2016 World Cup after signing an 18-month contract.
