Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim believes defender Harry Maguire deserves a recall to England’s national side.

Maguire, who has been capped 64 times by the Three Lions, was one of the high-profile names left out of last summer’s Euro 2024 squad and has featured just once since, against Republic of Ireland in September.

The 31-year-old was stripped of the Man Utd captaincy in the summer of 2023 by Erik ten Hag but has turned in some improved performances for the Red Devils despite their struggles as a team this season.

Maguire scored winners against Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round as well as Ipswich Town in the Premier League last month.

New England manager Thomas Tuchel will name his first England squad this month for the World Cup European qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.

Ahead of facing Fulham in the fourth round, Amorim said of a potential England recall: “If it’s enough is with the national coach. I would be really happy for him, I think he deserves [it].

“He is a great guy, I think he needs to still improve because when you are a player you can improve every time and improve a lot of things,” added Amorim, who was speaking ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup fifth round against Fulham at Old Trafford.

“But I think his performances in the moment are quite good and you feel he is more a leader now that can help a national team, so I hope he is in the national team in the next games.”

After struggling with injury in the first half of the season, Maguire has started 14 of United’s last 16 games in all competitions.
