Atletico Madrid have sold the naming rights for the Metropolitano to Saudi Arabian airline Riyadh Air.

Riyadh Air have been the shirt sponsor for Atletico for over a year but have now increased their investment with the club’s home ground re-named the Riyadh Air Metropolitano until 2033.

Riyadh Air are owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, who are also the majority owners of Premier League club Newcastle United as well as the organisers of the LIV Golf tour.

PIF is chaired by Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, who oversees a kingdom with one of the worst human rights records in the world according to Amnesty International.

Atletico CEO Miguel Ángel Gil, said: “A little more than a year after the signing of the sponsorship agreement with Riyadh Air, we all feel proud and very happy to announce the expansion of the alliance signed then with the agreement by which our stadium is now called Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

“Thanks to [Riyadh Air CEO] Tony Douglas and his entire team for trusting Atlético de Madrid as a strategic partner for the launch and development of his ambitious project at a global level.”

Atletico are third in La Liga and unbeaten in their first nine games.
