Tottenham have responded to reports linking captain Son Heung-min with Barcelona by triggering a clause in his contract that ties him to the club until 2026.

Son’s current deal, signed in 2021, was for four years but contained the option for Spurs to extend it by 12 months which they have done to prevent losing the 32-year-old on a free in the summer.

The South Korean’s potential availability had reportedly drawn the attention of Barcelona, who are looking for cut-price options given their financial problems.

The Liga club were also thought to be drawn to Son given his popularity in the Far East and the potential commercial opportunities that would have brought.

Son signed for Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen with the club describing him this morning as a “modern-day great”.

He has made 431 appearances for the club, scoring 169 goals – the fourth most in Spurs history.

Four-time Asian Player of the Year, Son won the Premier League Golden Boot in 2021/22, alongside Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, after netting 23 times.
