Evanilson

Bournemouth’s record signing Evanilson scored his first Premier League goal as the Cherries swept past Southampton in a brilliant first-half display.

Evanilson’s volley was added to by goals from Dango Ouattara and Antoine Semenyo before the break as the home side were too quick, strong and good for the winless Saints.

Southampton boss Russell Martin made a triple substitution at the interval and his much-improved side responded with a Taylor Harwood-Bellis goal to trigger hopes of a fightback.

But the away side ran out of steam again and have now gone 19 Premier League games without a win – the equivalent of half a season.

Evanilson off the mark

Bournemouth on the other hand are up to 11th place and will be delighted to see their £40m signing from Porto get off the mark. His finish was superb from a quickly-taken free-kick by Marcus Tavernier, volleying smartly past Aaron Ramsdale.

The impressive Semenyo then danced down the right and cut the ball back to Lewis Cook, whose shot from the edge of the area went in off the ankles of Ouattara.

Semenyo made it three before the 40-minute mark when he chopped inside a challenge and fired in hard and low.

Saints down to 19th

Southampton needed a fast response in the second half and got one. A good save from Kepa kept out Hardwood-Bellis but when the ball was played back in by Mateus Fernandes the centre-back stretched to head into the net.

The Saints threatened on occasion but despite the best attempts of Ben Brereton Diaz and Ross Stewart there was no second goal.

Martin’s side fall to 19th place, only off the bottom on goal difference.
