Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler admits he got caught up in the moment after being shown a red card against Nottingham Forest last week.

The Seagulls head coach was involved in the aftermath of Morgan Gibbs-White being sent off for a late tackle on Joao Pedro.

Reflecting on his first red card experience in the Premier League, Hurzeler admitted it was a learning curve in his managerial career.

He said: “I know I will be on the sidelines for Chelsea, and that will be the most positive thing – I can support, I can help my team.

“Of course, I also have to learn from this situation, how fast you can get a red card here in this league, and it’s a learning process for me as well.

“But of course, the fine, we will accept that.”

“In the game, I didn’t know what I got the red card for, and then I talked to Howard Webb, because in the end, I heard I got this red card for stepping on the pitch.

“I think if you give a red card for this, you have to ban a lot of coaches during the games, because it happens in emotional situations and phases of the game – it will happen, that you step on the pitch.

“Of course, we are all role models, and we have to act like this, but I think also, you should bring out your emotions. In this case, it was just to protect my player.”

Hurzeler says he has had a conversation with Webb about refereeing in the division as well.

He added: “I think the main thing is they are very open. Howard Webb is also very open, he listens to me and gave me a clear explanation of the situation: how the referee saw the scene, how the fourth official saw the scene.

“Sometimes I don’t agree with why the referee gives a foul, but at the same time, they won’t agree with what I’m doing on the sideline.

“But for me, it’s very important to have a respectful relationship, be very respectful, be very empathetic and listen, and in the end, I hope we find the right solutions.”
