New footage has emerged of Phil Foden sarcastically clapping the Manchester United fans after they barracked him with chants relating to his mother that Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola described as “lacking integrity and class”.

Foden was singled out for abuse by the Stretford End during yesterday’s drab 0-0 draw between the sides at Old Trafford with songs targeting the England international’s mum Claire Rowlands echoing around Old Trafford.

Foden was seen clapping and giving the United fans a thumbs-up after entering the United penalty area while City were on the attack.

Asked about the incidents after the game, Guardiola said: “Lack of class. But it’s not United, it’s the people, you know?

“We are so exposed, people who are on the screen in world football – managers, owners, and football players especially.

“Honestly, I don’t understand the mind of the people involving the mum of Phil. It’s a lack of integrity, class, and they should be ashamed.”

Foden withdrawn after another lifeless performance

Foden was taken off 13 minutes into the second half after a quiet display that typified his season, and Guardiola admitted his current performance levels have dropped off from those that helped City to four successive Premier League titles.

He added: “When the team is not playing at the level that we had, it looks like everyone is not what they were.

“I see the passion and smile on his face every day in training and that is what I want.

“You see the numbers of players who have been four, five, six years. This year we drop and it’s all of them – that’s why we are struggling to win but the quality is there.

“He won the Premier League in the last games [last year, in the game against West Ham with two goals. His impact was incredible and he will be back.”
