Former Everton captain Don Hutchison has hit back at Neal Maupay following the striker’s recent social media post in which he took a swipe at the Toffees.

Hutchison called Maupay, who is on loan at Marseille from Everton, a “failure” after the forward took aim at the Merseyside club on X following the defeat to 2-0 to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Maupay, known for his trolling who previously posted a Shawshank Redemption meme after leaving Goodison Park in the summer, wrote: “Whenever I’m having a bad day I just check the Everton score and smile.”

Though the 28-year-old is technically still owned by the Blues, Marseille have an obligation to make the deal permanent in the summer meaning he has played his final game for Everton.

Hutchison, who played for the Toffees in the Premier League between 1998 and 2000 hit back: “Obviously Everton are living rent free in his head.

“Take heart Everton fans knowing that every night he is thinking of how much of a failure and he couldn’t handle or cope playing for such a great club.”

Hutchison was not the only one to publicly criticise Maupay for his post.

Former boxer Tony Bellew, who supports Everton, replied on X with: “P***k!”, while another Toffees fan, former Swansea City striker Lee Trundle, added: “You played for the club mate, have a bit of respect as an ex player. Speaking like that [you are] part of the problem.”

Maupay signed for Everton from Brighton in 2022 for an undisclosed fee. During his time at Goodison Park, he scored one goal in the top flight in 29 appearances.

He has played regularly under Roberto de Zerbi at Marseille this term, making 12 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice and claiming four assists.

De Zerbi’s side are currently second in Ligue 1, ten points behind leaders PSG.
