West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui

West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui chose to focus on the positives despite a 5-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Lopetegui pointed out that the team’s performance in the majority of the game was good until a late red card changed the match.

It has been the story of the Hammers’ season so far, where they have played well in patches but are struggling to pick up points.

But they have another opportunity this weekend when they face Brentford.

Speaking to the media, Lopetegui said: “It’s always hard to have one less player in the match.

“It’s true that we did very good things for 75 minutes, but it was a very different end after the red card.”

“We did positive things in my opinion and were close to winning the match. The boys worked very hard for 75 minutes, but we have to accept the result.”

Lopetegui also spoke about West Ham’s season so far and believes that the team has been unlucky in some of their results.

He added: “I am sure that these players will overcome, but it is true that we need one win and we want to win the next match.

“Brentford are a strong team and we have to head into the match with big energy and commitment.

“In the Premier League, each match is very difficult for every team.”

“We have had good moments, but we need to be more consistent to make sure we win matches.”

“In the matches we have lost, we have deserved more, but I repeat, we have lost them and we don’t find excuses, and we have to improve.
