Newcastle moved fifth in the Premier League and condemned Leicester City to a record-breaking eighth successive home defeat without scoring courtesy of two Jacob Murphy goals and one by Harvey Barnes at the King Power Stadium.

Murphy tapped in Tino Livramento’s cross after two minutes, drawing boos from the home fans and a dismayed demeanour from Foxes manager Ruud van Nistelrooy to begin the latest dispiriting performance in Leicester’s slide towards relegation.

Their dreadful start continued when visiting defender Fabian Schar’s shot from the halfway line smacked the crossbar, bounced down and was slotted in by Murphy, with City’s outfield players conspicuous by their absence.

Former Leicester winger Barnes added a third in the 34th minute, striking from the rebound after goalkeeper Mads Hermansen pushed Joelinton’s curling effort into his path.

Leicester break record for home defeats without scoring

A day after Southampton became the earliest ever team to suffer Premier League relegation, Leicester’s landmark of lamentability is arguably a greater embarrassment after Ruud van Nistelrooy’s players became the first team in English Football League history to record no points and no goals in eight straight home games.

Van Nistelrooy is the favourite to be the next top-flight manager to leave – Southampton’s Ivan Juric exited hours before this timid defeat – and his record is now 15 losses in 18 league games in charge.

Patson Daka almost spared Leicester that record when the forward’s shot hit both Newcastle posts three minutes before the break, but the severity of their form adds insult to injury and they are now 15 points from safety with 21 to play for.

Perhaps the only bright spot for last season’s Championship winners was the late introduction of 15-year-old Jeremy Monga, making the academy left-winger the second youngest player in Premier League history.

Newcastle in Champions League places

Twenty-two days after winning the EFL Cup, Newcastle are in a strong position to have more to celebrate at the end of the season, going level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea and four behind Nottingham Forest with a game in hand on all of their rivals for European qualification.

They are a point ahead of Manchester City and two clear of Aston Villa, making a return to the competition for the second time in three seasons a distinct possibility after their second victory in six days.

Newcastle fixtures: Man United next

Newcastle are next in action at home to 13th-placed Manchester United on Sunday (16:30 BST), with Crystal Palace their visitors three days later (19:30).

Leicester travel to ninth-placed Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday (15:00), meeting the last Premier League team to concede at the King Power Stadium when the Seagulls drew 2-2 there on December 8.
