Manchester United this morning sacked Erik ten Hag after two and a half years in charge at Old Trafford.
The Dutchman won the EFL Cup and FA Cup with United but the club have failed to progress under his leadership and yesterday’s 2-1 defeat at West Ham left them 14th in the Premier League table.
A statement read: “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.
“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”
We examine the contenders to replace Ten Hag on a permanent basis with all odds correct as of 1235 on October 28.

XAVI – 2/1 with bet365
Reports last week linked former Barcelona boss Xavi with the United job.
The 44-year-old left Barca in May after a fractious relationship with president Joan Laporta.
He cut his managerial teeth at Al Sadd before moving back to Catalonia in 2021. He led Barca to the Spanish title in 2023 and has a good command of English.
VAN NISTELROOY – 1/2 with William Hill
Possession is nine tenths of the law and all that…
Van Nistelrooy finds himself in a similar situation to Ole Gunnar Solskajer, another former United striker who took over initially on a short-term basis following the sacking of Jose Mourinho in 2018 and was handed a three-year contract three months later.
Van Nistelrooy was previously head coach at PSV Eindhoven, leading them to the 2023 KNVB Cup.

GARETH SOUTHGATE – 8/1 with Betfred
Southgate left the England job following the Three Lions’ defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
While it was widely acknowledged he did a good job with England, leading them to a World Cup semi-final and back-to-back finals at the European Championship, he struggled to shake off the perception he lacked ambition at crucial moments.
Harrogate-based Southgate recently said he wanted to take a year out but would find it hard to turn down the job at United if he was offered it.

RUBEN AMORIM – 8/1 with BetVictor
The ambitious choice.
Amorim is regarded as one of the best young coaches in Europe and was brought to Sporting Lisbon by sporting director Hugo Viana four and a half years ago, subsequently leading them to two Primeira Liga titles.
Viana is moving to Manchester City at the end of the season prompting speculation Amorim may follow if Pep Guardiola opts against extending his contract at the Etihad.
THOMAS FRANK – 15/2 with SkyBet
Frank came through the Danish FA’s system before getting his chance at Brondby.
He joined Brentford in 2016 initially as an assistant to Richard O’Kelly but took over the top job just under two years later. He led the Bees to promotion to the Premier League two-and-a-half years after that and helped stabilise the club in the top flight thanks to clever recruitment and a modern, high-press philosophy.
Would be a sensible choice but club may have doubts over his ability to manage at the very top level.

Terzic led boyhood club Borussia Dortmund to the final of the Champions League last season, where they lost to Real Madrid.
Twelve months earlier, Dortmund went into the final day in pole position to win the Bundesliga title but lost out to Bayern Munich after only managing a 2-2 draw with Mainz on the final day.
