Manchester United’s plans for a new stadium edged a step closer last night after they received the green light from Trafford Council.

United are looking to either build a new, 100,000-seater venue to replace Old Trafford, or revamp the current ground and increase the capacity to 87,000.

The club will decide which path to take at the end of the season but both would require local council approval given the impact it would have on the local economy and infrastructure.

That was granted via a verbal vote at a town hall meeting last night.

Coun Liz Patel, executive member for economy and regeneration at Trafford council, said: β€œI am delighted these plans have been approved by the council executive. As the report says, this is one of the most significant opportunities for urban renewal in Trafford and the results will be great for the area and the surrounding region.

β€œThis is a hugely exciting project and working with our partners and private developers, we will be looking to create thousands of new homes, new neighbourhoods, and a world-class setting for the Manchester United stadium.

β€œTogether with Manchester United, Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Salford City Council, we will make sure these plans will benefit everyone including local residents, businesses and football fans.”

Plans receive government backing

It is estimated a new stadium could add Β£7.3billion to the economy and create 90,000 jobs.

The plans have already been backed by the Labour government who can see the economic and social benefits of such an extensive plan for regeneration.

United would fund the stadium development but public money is likely to be used for the redevelopment of the surrounding area.
