Manchester United have been dealt a significant blow with forward Joshua Zirkzee expected to be out for several weeks due to a hamstring injury.
It is an absence that could potentially stretch through the remainder of the campaign, joining the likes of Lisandro Martinez on the treatment table.
The 23-year-old Dutch international was forced off during the second half of United’s loss to Newcastle on Sunday.
Since then, he has undergone medical evaluations to assess the seriousness of the problem.
Although head coach Ruben Amorim is expected to provide an update during his press conference on Wednesday, ahead of the pivotal Europa League quarter-final clash against Lyon at Old Trafford, reports say it is more than likely that Zirkzee will not return before the end of the campaign.
The news comes at a particularly inopportune moment for Amorim, with Thursday’s second leg against Lyon balanced at 2-2 and requiring a big effort to progress to the semi-finals.

Zirkzee, who joined United from Bologna last summer, has netted seven goals in all competitions.
He was in the starting line-up at Newcastle after scoring in the first leg against Lyon.
Manchester United still have six league fixtures to play, finishing with a home match against Aston Villa on May 25.
Should the team progress to the Europa League final, they would be competing in Bilbao, Spain, on May 21.
