Liverpool came from behind twice against Newcastle before Fabian Schar’s 90th-minute equaliser earned the hosts a point in a thrilling 3-3 draw at St James’ Park.

Mohamed Salah’s double had looked like earning the title-chasing Reds the victory after Anthony Gordon had put Newcastle back in front following goals from Alexander Isak and Curtis Jones either side of half-time.

But Fabian Schar struck in the 90th minute to earn the Toon a deserved point in an entertaining encounter on Tyneside.

The draw means Arne Slot’s men’s seven-game winning run comes to an end, with their lead at the top of the Premier League reduced to seven points.

As it happened

The Magpies managed to keep the visitors at bay in a tetchy opening and had the first sight of goal when Isak combined with Joelinton before opting to pass across goal rather than shoot as the Reds managed to clear.

That seemed to spark Liverpool into life as Alexis Mac Allister forced a good save out of Nick Pope before another long-range drive hit the post.

It was then Newcastle’s turn to trouble the woodwork as Jacob Murphy found himself in a glorious position on the right before his well-struck effort across goal hit the wrong side of Caoimhin Kelleher’s upright.

Bruno Guimaraes then shot tamely into the keeper’s hands before Cody Gakpo was denied with a block up the other end after stealing the ball in the box.

The Toon found the breakthrough they arguably deserved on 35 minutes after a smart swivel from Guimaraes allowed the Brazilian to release Isak, who cut inside Virgil van Dijk before rifling past Kelleher.

Liverpool looked out of sorts and Anthony Gordon could easily have doubled their lead moments later after being put through by Isak but the England winger could not beat the Reds keeper with his finish, with Murphy then going close from distance.

Slot got the reaction he would have been looking for at half-time as Mohamed Salah set Curtis Jones free, with the midfielder’s effort catching Nick Pope slightly as he found the roof of the net.

Man-of-the-moment Salah came alive after that moment as he produced another chance for Darwin Nunez moments later but the Uruguayan was inches from finding the touch.

But just when it looked like Liverpool would assert their superiority, Gordon put the Toon back in front after neatly faskingh a shot before sliding the ball home.

An eventful game continued as Pope had to be on hand to prevent Jones from grabbing a second, his close-range header clawed away with a reflex save.

That goal did eventually come through as a smart break saw substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold cut the ball back to Salah who neatly found the far bottom corner.

Once again though, Newcastle did not let that goal keep them down as they continued to test the leaders, with Murphy unable to divert the ball into the net after his break forced Kelleher out of his goal.

Another good chance came Liverpool’s way as Nunez shanked an effort wide from a promising position after Luis Diaz’s shot was blocked.

But just when it looked like Liverpool would get over the line, Schar stepped up for the Toon as he latched onto a Guimaraes free-kick to find the net from a tight angle.
