Newcastle are taking a day-by-day approach to Anthony Gordon’s fitness, according to assistant manager Jason Tindall.
The Magpies host Manchester United in the Premier League this weekend as they look to secure their place in Europe next season.
It has already been a campaign to remember for the Tyneside club, who won the Carabao Cup against Liverpool.
Now, their full focus is on ending their domestic campaign strongly, with the battle for Champions League football a very close affair.
Eddie Howe was absent for his pre-match press conference, with Tindall making sure to address the change in line-up for the media.
He said: “He’s been bed-ridden. We’ve been in contact every day so it’s not affected any of the preparations. I’m sure he’ll be fine for the weekend.”
If Newcastle are to make their claim for a European place, they will need Gordon back fit and healthy for the run-in.

And Tindall provided an encouraging update on the star winger.
He added: “He’s had a decent week with the physios. He was back out on the grass for a pitch session yesterday. We will assess him today and we will have to make a late call to see if he’s available for the bench on Sunday.”
This weekend will see the introduction of semi-automated offside technology in the Premier League.
It is an advancement that has been in the works for months after a successful spell in the Champions League and Europe.
And with VAR constantly under fire for it’s length of time and inaccuracy, the likes of Tindall and other coaches have welcomed the much-needed change.
He finished: “Everyone welcomes any change that will make the league better and make these decisions a lot quicker. If it improves the speed of decisions then of course we welcome it for sure.”
