Liverpool are the new leaders of the Premier League after hitting back to beat Brighton while Manchester City lost at Bournemouth.

Ferdi Kadioglu put Brighton ahead at Anfield and they were good value for their lead as Liverpool toiled for any rhythm against a side they beat in the EFL Cup in midweek.

That was until Cody Gakpo, who scored twice at the Amex Stadium on Wednesday night, curled in a cross that eluded everyone and went in.

Mohamed Salah then netted a quickfire second with a brilliant shot from the edge of the box.

There was further cause for celebration among the home fans when news filtered through that they had gone top courtesy of City’s surprise 2-1 defeat at the Vitality Stadium.

Goals from Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson put the Cherries in control and, even though Josko Gvardiol pulled one back, a late onslaught did not produce an equaliser as Pep Guardiola’s men saw their 32-match unbeaten run in the Premier League come to an end.

Arsenal missed the chance to close the gap on City after losing 1-0 at Newcastle at lunchtime, Alexander Isak scoring the only goal with a fine header.

Forest flying

Nottingham Forest moved above the Gunners and into third with a resounding 3-0 win over 10-man West Ham.

The in-form Chris Wood put the home side ahead after 27 minutes and West Ham’s task was made more difficult when Edson Alvarez was shown a second yellow card on the stroke of half time for a silly tackle on Anthony Elanga.

Callum Hudson-Odoi made it 2-0 with a cross-shot that evaded Lukasz Fabianski and Ola Aina completed a wonderful day for Forest with the third after 78 minutes.

Armstrong goal sees off Toffees

Southampton earned their first league win of the season thanks to a 1-0 victory over Everton at St Mary’s.

Adam Armstrong hit an 85th-minute winner for Russell Martin’s men, just seconds after Everton striker Beto had rattled the crossbar at the other end.

Beto also saw a late equaliser ruled out by VAR.

Ipswich were denied their first win when Jordan Ayew netted a 94th-minute equaliser for Leicester City at Portman Road.

The hosts looked to have done enough when Leif Davis’ neat volley had them ahead late on.

But Kalvin Phillips was then dismissed for a second yellow card and the Foxes took advantage when Ayew played a one-two with Jamie Vardy before firing home.

Wolves and Crystal Palace drew 2-2 in the evening kick-off at Molineux.
