Arsenal and Liverpool both began what they hope will be title-chasing 2023-24 seasons with wins in the Premier League results today.

The Reds kicked off Saturday’s action at newly-promoted Ipswich Town before Arsenal hosted Wolves in one of four games at 3pm BST.

Brighton & Hove Albion won by the largest scoreline of the day at Everton, and Newcastle also started with three points at home to Southampton, who won the Championship play-offs last season.

Catch up with what happened in Saturday’s six top-flight matches with our round-up of the results on the opening day.

Arsenal vs Wolves: Saka, Havertz open accounts

Bukayo Saka played his first competitive match since the final of Uefa Euro 2024 with England by starring as Arsenal won a seventh successive encounter with Wolves.

Kai Havertz headed Arsenal in front after 25 minutes and Saka struck with 16 minutes remaining to seal a comfortable 2-0 victory.

Ipswich vs Liverpool: Jota, Salah score

New manager Arne Slot was unimpressed with Liverpool’s first-half display at Ipswich, who contained Mohamed Salah and his team-mates until the forward crossed for Diogo Jota to convert the 60th-minute opener.

Salah’s close-range finish five minutes later gave Liverpool comfort in a 2-0 win but will only have mildly dampened the mood for hosts celebrating their first appearance in the Premier League since 2002.

Everton vs Brighton: Hurzeler joy

The youngest permanent manager in Premier League history enjoyed a dream start as strikes from Kaoru Mitoma in the 25th minute, Danny Welbeck in the 56th and Simon Adingra four minutes from time gave Fabian Hurzeler’s Brighton a 3-0 win at Everton.

The Toffees, who were reduced to 10 men when Ashley Young was sent off for denying Mitoma a clear goalscoring opportunity midway through the second half, had a Jack Harrison goal ruled out for offside with the score 0-0 and a penalty overturned by a pitchside monitor review at the start of the second half.

Newcastle vs Southampton: Joelinton wins it

Joelinton scored the only goal of the game just before half-time as Newcastle, who earlier had Fabian Schar dismissed for a confrontation with Ben Brereton Diaz, spoiled Southampton’s Premier League return.

Alex McCarthy’s poor pass afforded the Magpies their winner, gifting possession to Alexander Isak, who teed up Joelinton’s finish.

Nottingham Forest vs Bournemouth: Point apiece

Antoine Semenyo earned Bournemouth their first point since the departure of 2023-24 top scorer Dominic Solanke by nudging in from close range with four minutes remaining of a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.

After home midfielder Danilo broke his ankle early on, Chris Wood swept in midway through the first half to put Forest ahead. The Cherries also had a goal ruled out during the first half.

West Ham vs Aston Villa: Duran goal settles game

Amadou Onana’s fourth-minute header and Jhon Duran’s first-time finish 11 minutes from time ensured Aston Villa, who finished fourth last season, won 2-1 at West Ham.

In the hosts’ first game under Julen Lopetegui, Lucas Paqueta equalised with a 37th-minute penalty after Matty Cash brought down Tomas Soucek.
