Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was full of praise for his team after the Magpies picked up their fifth straight Premier League victory with a 2-1 win over Tottenham.

Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak grabbed the goals as Howe’s side came from behind to pick up all three points at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

Dominic Solanke had given Spurs an early lead, and piled on the pressure late on, but the visitors held on as they continue their push to break into the top four.

“We had to dig deep today,” Howe told TNT Sports after the game. “That was a tough win but a massive one for us.”

When asked about a possible handball in the build up to Newcastle’s equaliser, Howe admitted the ball struck Joelinton’s arm but said he was not clear on the rules in that situation.

The Magpies boss was also quick to praise the in-form Isak, who became only the third Newcastle player ever to score in seven consecutive Premier League games, after Alan Shearer and Joe Willock.

“He’s [Isak] in the right place at the right time again, and that is an art,” said Howe.

“[He’s scored] massive goals for us. He’s on a really hot streak and long may that continue.”

Howe added that his team’s impressive recent run has helped to instil a confidence in the squad.

“The confidence has definitely shifted as it naturally does when you win games. I think this was something we were building to. Our performances, generally, were pretty good.

“We went through a really difficult run but in amongst those, there are games that we probably should have won. But we’re a very good team. We’ve got good players so I like to think we can keep it [the run] going.”

Isak agreed that the mood in the camp is good but said the players must not get ahead of themselves.

“It’s about keeping that energy, keeping the same level because it can turn at any point. We need to stay focussed and still work hard to keep winning.”

About his own goalscoring run, the striker added: “I’m really happy, how things are going. I go into every game with the same mentality to score.

“I don’t think about breaking records or anything like that. It’s just a positive.”

“I don’t think it’s just individually, it’s collectively. As a team we’ve been very good recently. I think we’ve played really well. It makes it easier for the individuals. It goes hand in hand.”
