Half-time substitute Harvey Barnes curled in a spectacular 80th-minute winner as Newcastle came from behind to move third in the Premier League by winning at Wolves.

Barnes struck his spectacular second goal of the season five minutes after Fabian Schar’s effort from distance had looped in via a deflection, levelling after Mario Lemina had slotted the hosts in front in the 36th minute in the culmination of a lightning counter-attack.

Jorgen Strand Larsen, who had set up Lemina’s opener via a clever Joao Gomes stepover, sent a shot against a post eight minutes after the break for Wolves, while Anthony Gordon curled an effort against the woodwork before Lemina scored.

Gary O’Neil’s side are third-bottom with one point from three matches, having lost their previous home league game 6-2 to Chelsea.

Wolves vs Newcastle: Barnes ‘caught it lovely’

With 10 points from four games, Newcastle have made their best start to a Premier League season since they won their first four games under Kevin Keegan in 1995-96.

“You could see we needed to improve on the first half and it was a big ask in the second half,” said Barnes, who was introduced as part of a triple substitution by manager Eddie Howe at the break, speaking to Sky Sports.

“We haven’t hit the heights of last season but we are finding ways to win at the moment and that’s important. When the team is behind, you have to take it on yourself to make a difference and I caught it lovely.

“We pride ourselves on clean sheets and in our attacking play there are spells when it’s not quite clicking, We are getting there. It’s a good start points-wise, but performance-wise we can improve.”

Newcastle goals ‘big’

Schar’s goal was his first not to come from a header in almost eight months. “We started the game quite well and then we dropped off a little with our level,” he said.

“They were two great goals and it is a big win when you are away from home and [behind]. It is massive for us. We can play a lot better.

“At the moment, it is great that we get the results. We need to be more consistent throughout the game. We want to go to the next level.

“We know the feeling of playing in Europe but we are not there so we focus on the league. There is lots to achieve.”
