Claudio Ranieri was today appointed head coach of Roma for the third time on a deal until the end of the season.
The 73-year-old, who was born in the city, will take charge of the first team until May when he will then move into a senior executive role in which he will “advise the ownership on all sporting matters at the club”.

Recognising this is a short-term appointment, Roma will spend the coming months looking for a successor with Ranieri also having a say in the decision.
Ranieri is Roma’s third coach of the season. Club legend Daniele De Rossi, who took over from Jose Mourinho in January, was sacked just four games into the 2024-25 campaign.
Then, earlier this week, with Roma sitting 12th in Serie A having lost four of their last five league games, Ivan Juric was relieved of his duties after just 53 days in charge.
Back for a third spell
Under Ranieri, Roma finished second in the 2009-10 season, ending the campaign two points behind Mourinho’s Inter Milan.
His second spell at the helm in 2019 saw him take temporary charge until the end of the season, with the club ultimately missing out on Champions League football after finishing sixth.
Throughout his career, Ranieri has had 23 managerial appointments, including stints at Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Napoli.
He is most famous in England for masterminding Leicester City’s remarkable Premier League title triumph in 2016.
