Former Real Madrid and Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from football due to a knee problem.
The 31-year-old, who also won 93 caps for France and was a pivotal figure in their 2018 World Cup success in Russia, took the decision after suffering the injury with Como.
Varane joined the Serie A newcomers in the summer after failing to earn a contract extension at United but lasted just 20 minutes of his debut before breaking down.
He hinted at remaining at Como now his playing days were over and said there would be further news later on his exact role.
He said on Instagram: “They say all good things must come to an end.
“In my career I have taken on many challenges, rose to occasion after occasion, almost all of it was supposed to be impossible. Incredible emotions, special moments and memories that will last a lifetime. Reflecting on these moments, it is with immense pride and a feeling of fulfilment that I am announcing my retirement from the game that we all love.
“I hold myself to the highest standard, I want to go out strong, not just holding on to the game. It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and your instinct. Desire and needs are two different things.
“I have fallen and risen a thousand times, and this time, it’s the moment to stop and hang my boots up with my final game winning a trophy at Wembley.”
Having broken through at Lens, Varane was snapped up by Madrid in 2011 aged 18 and signed a six-year deal at the Santiago Bernabéu.
After a period of transition, he became a first-team regular in the 2012-13 campaign and went on to enjoy 10 trophy-laden seasons which saw him claim three La Liga crowns and four Champions League trophies.
He joined United in the summer of 2021 and, although injuries restricted his appearances, he still helped the club claim the EFL Cup in 2023 and FA Cup the season after.
